What is a personal statement?
When applying to any college or graduate admission, very likely you may be asked to submit a personal statement along with your CV. To boil down to its essence, it should answer the following questions: Who you are? What can you offer? What are your career goals? The personal statement is your chance to sell yourself in a manner that will be compelling to admissions committees.
Why is it so important to write a compelling PS?
Before you begin, you should make sure you already know the difference between statement of purpose (SOP) and personal statement (PS). Simply speaking, SOP is about your work, while PS is about you. It is where you can distinguish yourself from the other candidates. It should give the committee an image of you as a person and also concrete evidence why you are the perfect fit for what you are applying to. And you should keep in mind that when admissions tutors are going over your application documents, they don’t really have too much time for each of the hundreds, and even thousands, of applicants. So you have to grab their attention quickly with an outstanding PS.
What makes your PS unique and stand out?
The key word is “personal”. There are several kinds of information you should include in the PS. Specifically,
- Research what skills and qualities the subject you are applying to requires.
- Communicate your genuine interest and enthusiasm for your application.
- Emphasize your experiences related to the subject.
- Showcase your ability to persevere despite obstacles.
- Indicate your communication skills.
- However, don’t make a long list of things you’ve done without explaining.
